Apple Launches New $129 Battery Cases For IPhone XS, XS Max, And XR
Apple has not offered a Smart Battery Case option for the iPhone since the introduction of the iPhone 7, presumably due to the wireless charging feature in the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. There has also never been a battery case for larger iPhones, with prior cases limited to the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 7.
Order one of the new battery cases now, and you won't have to wait long to slap it on your iPhone. Apple's online store promises deliver orders for almost every version of the case by the end of the week. The one exception: the white iPhone XR case, which lists a delivery date by the end of January as of this writing.

Apple has released a battery case with a difference. The company released its Smart Battery Case this week for the iPhone XS, XR and XS Max, the three models it launched to great fanfare three months prior. As we saw in our iPhone XR review, the XR already has impressive battery life, so adding this case to it will get you some serious endurance: 39, 22, and 27 hours respectively for those use cases. Apple tested the battery life on pre-production units of the matching iPhone models, according to a footnote on each case's Apple Store page. We've usually found that Apple's own claims about its products' battery life are pretty close to reality in our reviews, but of course, a term like "Internet use" is sufficiently vague as to not be very useful.
In a notice published on Friday(Opens in a new window), Apple confirmed it'll replace all affected units manufactured between January 2019 and October 2019. Some iPhone battery cases are unable to charge or only do so intermittently when plugged into a power source, which prevents the iPhone from charging properly.
Customers reported the issue to Apple in force, and the Cupertino-based company responded with this replacement program. It focuses only on Smart Battery Case units made for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Other battery cases made for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro cannot be replaced free of charge.
